Took a Plunge....Splash!!

YES.....We took a BIG plunge this summer and it has made a BIG SPLASH in our backyard!!!!  After 7 years of being members at the Southland Family Pool, we cashed in our membership and decided it was time to make a SPLASH in our own backyard.  Actually we had been contemplating it for a year or so but finally it is DONE and I will say once they got started, WOW, did it happened quickly!!!  What a backyard makeover!

Beginning of Day1 (June 14th): Nothing but flat surface when you look out from the back of our house, standing on our covered patio.
Side picture of our yard, before the dig!
The first dig...keeping our fingers crossed that they do not hit ROCK!!!
Shortly after lunch, we'll you guessed it.....they hit ROCK......19 inches from 8 feet and they hit ROCK!!! We had two choices: 1. stop and make it a 6 foot pool which would still require adjustments to be made since the pool has already been dug and sloped for 8 feet, meaning rock would need to be brought in, ha! OR option 2. rent a jackhammer that would attach to the excavator and hope that they could bust through the ROCK.  I will say that the hole diggers were dedicated they work a LONG day in the HOT sun trying to make it through to 8 feet.  This is where we ended up on the first day.
End of Day 2 - All walls are up and the footer is poured.  They were able to BLAST through the 19 inches of ROCK, now the kids will have their diving board.
End of Day 3 - This morning they came and finish the floor of the pool and put the liner in.  Both Phillip and I were at work and believe it or not both kids slept through all of it (after spending all of day one and two watching the process the choose the most interesting day to sleep).  Jonah work up around 1:30ish and they were starting to fill the pool.  Can you believe 3 days and we are this close to have a pool full of water??
Day four - we went to Holiday World so I didn't take any pictures plus all that happened that day and day 5 was filling of the pool which was a slow process and laying of pipes (boring).

End of Day 6 -As you can see by the end of day 6 the gravel was around the pool and it was filling.
End of Day 7 (1 week) - Courtney makes a splash!!!  Yes, that is dirt in the pool.  Because it was so DRY, every time the wind blew, clay dirt blew right into the pool.  Something we had to battle with until we got the sod laid.  One week after they started and the kids are swimming, unbelievable!!
The following week was a slow week as far as progress.  We had to wait on the inspector, then the electrician, but the water was cool and the little amount of time that the workers were there did not keep the kids out of the pool.  I am standing where the grill area is going to be looking out over the pool, which is off of the patio at the back of the house.
Two Weeks: Pool deck is done!  Hard part is the kids had made plans to do nothing but lounge in the pool on this day.  Had to keep everyone including the the four legged fury guys running around the backyard.
As you can tell by the picture below we are pretty much done, with the exception of the mound of dirt and one more small project, well maybe two.  Two weeks after the pool was started during record high temperatures, we spent the weekend laying sod, 4 pallets.  We were about to die, it was so HOT!!!!  That following week we had nothing but record high temps and NO rain but thank the Lord we are now seeing rain which the new sod and our water bill is appreciating.

Flashback Friday

These pictures are very dear to me because of the lady in the picture, my mother.  I can honestly say that she and I were not very close at all until around the time that this picture was taken, which was of course on my wedding day.  Sadly, the Lord took her from us on May 1, 2004 and I miss her dearly.  There's not a day that doesn't go by that I don't think about how wonderful of a women she was.

She was a lady of many talents.  She could do most anything crafty; scrapbooking, sewing, crocheting, painting, quiting, the list goes on she could do it.  Her cross stitch pieces looked at neat on the back as they did on the front.  She was always making things for people and volunteering her time.

She was not much on housekeeping, she would much rather spend her time outside or in her sunroom.  She loved to plant flowers and definitely had a green thumb.  She loved to entertain and always fixed a wonderful meal.  After Phillip and I got married we spent many a nights hanging out at mom and dad's for dinner and then playing a game or two of cards.  Man, I miss those days!!

5 months....

What a difference 5 months makes??
I remember the day he got his driving permit, February 21, 2012, it was a cold Tuesday morning and I was nervous for him as I sat outside the testing room while he took his test.  He had not study as much as I thought that he should and now he was taking the test that was going to allow him to drive with an adult.  Wow, it felt so surreal.  I remember the day like it was yesterday.  I remember when he came out with a smile on his face saying that he had passed, then I handed him the keys and he drove us back to the school.  Twice I FREAKED out, but it was truly his first time driving from downtown BG out pass our house to the high school, so I was allowed to FREAK out a little, RIGHT??
But as Jonah was driving the other day, I looked over at him and thought WOW, how things have changed in just 5 months. I no longer have to remind him to keep both hands on the steering wheel, Hallelujah!! I don’t FREAK out as much, even Jonah agrees to that. There are still times that I have to take a deep breathe but I try to keep it to myself more then I used to. I know that come August when he goes for his permanent license and passes, then takes off by himself for the first time, that I am going to be on pins and needles. I guess I’ll just need to say lots of prayers then for many save travels and returns.

It is still hard to believe that he is old enough to drive!!!

Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place
and gave Him the name that is above every name...

Ten things you may not know about Me

  1. I am the youngest of three.  My oldest sibling, Robbin is ten years older then I am and my brother is seven years older then I.  So it was almost as if I was a only child at certain times in my life, even though my brother didn't move out until I did.  We then moved out together and we're roommates for two years.
  2. Both of my kids were born c-section.  After 18 hours of labor with Jonah, it was a given that my body was not going to cooperate.  Then when Courtney came along my doctor and I just thought that it would be best.
  3. Both of my names came from my Grandmother's middle names.  My first name came from my mother's mom who thought her middle name was Kora until they sent off for her birth certificate when my mother was pregnant with me.  It then came back as Carla, mom and dad thought it would be a perfect name for me.  My middle name which is Lucille came from my dad's mom.  Part of me always wanted to name my daughter "Lucy".
  4. It drives me CRAZY to not make my bed in the morning.
  5. One reason for me not attending my 20th class reunion was...... Facebook.  I felt like Facebook had pretty much killed the purpose for a class reunion.
  6. I almost died at birth, in fact they did not think I would make it through the night. Boy, did I fool them!!
  7. I can't stand chocolate..... chocolate cake, ice cream, pudding, etc....
  8. My husband was "technically" my boss when we first starting dating and that was a BIG no, no with the company.  So we pretended like he was dating my roommate which was by best friend since I was 4.  We dated like this for four months until I took a job at a hospital in Gainesville and then we told everyone.  They couldn't believe it, the "gossiper" of the bunch about flipped.
  9. I can not whistle, seriously, how hard can it be!!!!
  10. I am not ticklish and it drives my family CRAZY!!!!
Well just TEN things on the TENTH about me that you may or may not have know.

This is what the LORD says—
He who created you...
He who formed you...
I have summoned you by name; you are Mine.

Weekend Happenings

Hey friends! Hope everyone had a great weekend! We had a pretty relaxing weekend with no big plans. It felt SO good to just lounge around with my husband and kiddos. We did a few more things in the backyard, we are now down to the finishing touches on our backyard makeover and it is looking up!

Saturday morning the kids and I were up early and at the park by 6:30 for their morning run.  Courtney ran 8 miles, I am so proud of her dedication especially in this heat.  Jonah had a good run also but his best run for the week was on Friday when he ran 9 miles with the college boys at a below 7 minute pace.  We then left the park and headed over to the have the kids labs drawn for their upcoming sports physicals.  Courtney HATES having her blood drawn so I did not say much about going and having this done prior to.  Afterwards we stop by Sonic for a early morning drink, you can't beat the 99cent drink deal before 10 a.m. :)

At church on Sunday after communion Courtney reaches into my purse for some chewing gum and you'll never believe what she pulled out.....a FORK!!!!  Not a plastic fork, but one of our silver forks from the house.  Of course we all got tickled!!!  The fork was from when I got home on Friday from work and I had my hands full so I stuck the clean fork that I had taken in the van that morning to eat my bowl of watermelon with in my purse.  I will say it was hilarious when she pulled a fork out of my purse in church.  Ha! Ha!

After church on Sunday we had lunch at Buckhead, I love their house salad with chicken strips and banana nut muffin, YUMMO!!!  Courtney was full and to my surprise did not finish all her fries like normal but instead before I realized it was making this tower out of her leftover french fries.  I had to take a picture!!!  I guess when your kids play with their food in public during their teenage years you can take pictures of it, instead of scolding them like you would when they were little. Ha!

Sunday evening we were BLESSED with some much needed rain, thank you LORD!!!!  I am not sure exactly how much we received but parts around us received up to 3".  It did cool things down some which I was thankful for.  We are now on day number 12 with having only one AC unit running and let me just say that one AC unit doesn't cut it especially when the temps have been in the 100's, but the part is on the way, so we are told.

That my heart may sing to You and not be silent.
O LORD my God, I will give You thanks forever.

Chalkboards :)

First let me thank a fellow blogger, Shannon for giving me the inspiration to finally create my own chalkboards.  For the longest time I've admired the use of chalkboards as decorative touches in the home but never have taken the time or investment to add them to our home.  Well neither the time nor the investment is not really that big of a deal if you know the how to's and the where's.  Again, I thank my fellow blogger.  Thank you, Shannon!!!

My first stop was my favorite thrift store, where I picked up these three items.  Yes, one is a silver platter and two are picture frames.  I was looking for something unique and also cheap. I paid around $5.00 for all 3, I talked him down on the black one because of the the condition of the frame, but I knew that I was going to be painting it (what can I say I'm a bargain shopper).

Next I sprayed painted the two frames with a white spray paint that you can use on anything (plastic, wood, glass, etc...).  I left everything in the frames since I would be painting over them with the chalkboard paint.
I painted two coats of the chalkboard paint on all three items.  I was a little frustrated with my paintbrush lines at first but after I was finished with the project and treated the surface with the chalk it was really hard to tell.  By the way....if you are wondering about by fancy "fruit" tablecloth.  Let me just say that this is the best way to go with any indoor projects.  Ever since the kids were little, I've had a vinyl tablecloth to spread out for them to color on, use for play dough, paint, etc.  Best thing is you can pick them up at the dollar store and wipe them clean and reuse.  Plus they are handy for my projects. :)
Here's my finished projects.  I am so tickled over them, especially this one which is in the hall bathroom.  Courtney wrote the word "LOVE" on it, she has such pretty handwriting, you would never know that she is left handed.  As you can see I attached a ribbon to the back to hang it from, I thought it dressed it up a little more.
I am happy with my little initial, even though this is the one that I keep walking by an writing something on and then going back to the initial, so there's no telling what will be on this chalkboard and again it's a chalkboard so I can change it any time I want. Ha!
I'm not in loved with my platter as much as I thought I would be.  Maybe it's my handwriting, or the location.  It's on a bookshelf in our bedroom right now, which is not where I had planned for it to go, so that may be my problem.
I've already got my eye out for another frame, something a little bigger.  I have a spot where I would like to put another chalkboard.  So if you see me heading in the thrift store you know what I am looking for.

Fourth of July

Well I wish that I could say I was able to sleep in and enjoy a relaxing morning of leisure this morning but that surely was not the case at my house. Phillip had to work a couple of hours this morning and the kids had to be at Kereiakes park to get their morning run in by 6:30, so needless to say my alarm went off at 5:20 on my day off…..UGH!!!

The kids finished their run and we arrived back at the house around 8:00.  Fighting the temptation to crawl back in bed for a nap, I instead made breakfast and assigned everyone chores to do. With that being said, one momma, two teenagers and two hours later, I had a clean house except for the mopping the tile floors. Which I decided to do after the running in and out of the house was done with for the day.

In the spirit of things and I am not sure why I didn't take more pictures of  my decorations, I guess I was either wrapped up in getting everything clean (ha!) or enjoying the day.  Again, another one of my plates that I decorated, this one is a plastic plate that I bought at Walmart back at Christmas, I love the stripes!!!  I printed this print off last year or the year prior and sadly I can not remember where I printed it from. The print is from Landee see, Landee do.  Thanks Shannon for reminding me where I saw it at.
As for the enjoyment of the day, Courtney ditched us, as she has been doing a lot of here lately.  I guess it’s a teenage thing that I’ve just got to get used to.   She turned down the sparkly clear pool for the mucky lake with her friend Bailee.  As for the rest of the us, we stayed cool in the pool until later this evening when we headed out to Alvaton Church of Christ for Festivities and Fireworks.
Jonah and Morgan, along with Phillip and I getting ready for the Fireworks!!!

Jonah was a little bummed this year that he was not able to set his own fireworks off since we are under a burn ban in the county. Praying for rain!!!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July!!!

He is before ALL things and in HIM ALL things hold together.

  • I am thankful that they have a LOVE for the Lord our Savior
  • I am thankful that they do not have any food allergies.  I feel for any one, parent or child who has to deal with this.

Heat Wave

For the third straight day, we set a new high temperature record in BG. Friday we reached 110° (second hottest temperature all time for the city), Saturday we reached 108° and today we reached 105°. A little too HOT if you ask me! Especially since last Friday we’ve been without one of our air conditioning units, in fact our main unit to be exact. So the kitchen and the main part of the house have been like an oven. The kids have been sleeping upstairs and during the day hanging out in our bedroom or the bonus room.  By the way, the high tomorrow is suppose to be 102°

As I stood in my kitchen tonight night cooking supper, I was taken back to days of when I was a kid growing up in my grandmother’s house, whom was better known as “Mema” to everyone. The only air conditioning that we had was a small tiny window unit that was in her dining room. Yet she cooked a many meals either with or without that AC unit running. Tonight I had a LARGE fan on the kitchen floor blowing air towards me. I had already baked a cake, had boiled potatoes for mashed potatoes and was frying chicken. I know many people today would have eaten out all weekend but we don’t function on eating out every meal but instead I made do and I as I stood there in my apron I thought this is how the women of years ago cook day in and day out, in the heat, usually finishing one meal just to start another no matter what the temperature is.

We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks, for Your Name is near...

Prayer Requests

This is a follow up on the Prayer Requests that I posted in my random thoughts on Tuesday post.

◦My friend's mother who had the surgery on Wednesday for the brain aneurysm, did not go so well.  They ended up finding a second aneurysm while they were in surgery and both of them were located in a way that they could not get to them with the procedure that they were doing.  So in three weeks she will be re-evaluated and will more then likely be rescheduled for another surgery this time it will be more invasive.  Please pray for her and her family.  My mother died 8 years ago because of an aneurysm and I cringe every time I hear of someone with one.  We never knew that my mother had one until after her death.

◦As for my my friend's custody hearing, nothing was decided after a very, very, very long day.  Her attorney was positive about the day but my friend was a bit disappointed, however she's determined and her TRUST is in the LORD!!! She has another court date set for August and her attorney says that something will be decided then.

Please, please remember these two ladies in your prayers.

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love"

Blog Commenting Challenge: Day 4

As for today's topic it is: Tell us about your hobbies! What do you do in your free time? What are your favorite books, movies, music etc?

First of all.....What is FREE TIME?????  Especially when you are a mother, wife, work, involved in church, well, I don't have to keep on going because I am sure that everyone who is reading this blog right now knows what I am talking about because we all have a BUSY schedule, I am sure.

But in the little amount of FREE time that I do have. I like to sneak away to my scrapbooking room.  I've been scrapbooking since my son was 1 1/2, so about 15 years.  I have around 50 scrapbooks, most of which is in chronicalogical order, I'm a little OCD about that.  Then I have several scrapbooks that are just of special books; baby books, school books, family vacations, anniversary trips, and our wedding album.  I hate to think how much I have spent over the years both time and money, of course it hasn't been wasted but my scrapbook buddies and I laugh to think about it and what we've spent in supplies.  SHHH!!!  Don't tell our spouses!!!!

Along with Scrapbooking I have really put this little machine to use, it's my cricut.  In fact with in the last couple of years I have probably use this machine more with cutting vinyl for decorative things then for scrapbooking.
Below are just a few things that I have made with my cricut and vinyl.  Are these not the cutest buckets?  I made them for a birthday party for a friend.
Another one of my plates, this one of course being for valentines day.
Talk about dressing up a cupcake holder, just a some vinyl and oh, so cute!!!!

I found this idea on Pinterest.  Of course I had to tweak it.  I made mine on a piece of wood board that we had in a garage and I had everything else.  So it was a no cost project, which I love :)
This is a collection of family photos that I hung on a small wall heading up to our bonus room.  I used my cricut to cut the word "FAMILY" out of vinyl.

LORD, be gracious to us! We wait for You. Be our strength every morning...

Blog Commenting Challenge: Day 3

Today's challenge asks us about our social media.  Well, I have a facebook account, but I keep it private. I use it to keep up with friends and family and share pictures of my kiddos.  I'm truly not a BIG fan of Facebook and if it wasn't for offending some people I would probably either delete about 75% of my "friends" or get rid of the account.  Like my brother in law says "facebook's the devil" and I have to agree 9 times out of 10.  People can be to vocal on FB and the garbage that is on there, well...... let me move on.

I do have a Twitter account and honestly I read more tweets then I post,  I think I may have posted 3 times, sad I know.  I do have many Pinterest boards. I love Pinterest. I don't go on it nearly as much as I used to but I still love it. I have tried quite a few of the receipes I pinned and I have even attempted a few of the projects!

I also read several blogs.  I love blogs that have variety in them, the ones that share their secrets on how they decorate and their bargin finds as well as their family.  A few of my favorite blogs are Bless Our Nest and Kellys Korner

You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, His generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus.

Random Thoughts on Tuesday

  • This week is VBS at our church.  Which means late nights for our family but I just love seeing all the faces of the little kids and I LOVE the songs that we sing at VBS, like the Hippo song.  The theme this year is All Aboard the Kingdom Express - Staying on Track in a Troubled World.
  • I would love to be asleep right now but instead I am waiting on clothes in the dryer.  I CAN"T STAND to leave clothes in the dryer after they are dry.
  • The Big Bang Theory is on right now, yeah it's a rerun but I Luv the show.......does anyone else????
  • My desk at work this week has been in overload.....UGH!!!!
  • I'm slightly sad at how fast the summer break seams to be flying by.  I just cringe when I see a display of school supplies.
  • I have massive organizing that needs to be done especially in my pantry.
  • Their predicting the highs for the end of the week to reach above 100 and no rain in sight.  For real that is hot especially with no rain, we are bone dry!!! Pretty ridiculous!!!
  • It amazes me that I still have to tell my 16 year old son to put down the rubber band and eat his oatmeal when he knows that we were running short on time.
  • My second blog book (2008) came in last week. I guess the next one that I order will be a combination of 3 years combine, for some reason I am not so enthused about ordering that one.
  • My 2 favorite apps on my phone right now are Sound Hound and Free Music Download
  • I miss my old blog friends.  They all quit blogging and so did I for a while.....oh well, I am blogging for the memories not the comments, besides someone is reading this silly blog because it shows up number of views.
  • I'm pretty burned out on Facebook and the garbage that comes across it.  My brother in law always says that Facebook is the devil and sometimes most times that is true.
  • ***Prayer Requests***
    • My friend's mother is having surgery in the morning.  She has an brain aneurysm, her second one.  Please pray for her.
    • I have another friend who is heading to custody hearing tomorrow with her close friend.  Her friend has requested that the following things specifically be lifted up in prayer: Justice, Fairness, and Truth.  Please pray for her.
Told you it was ALL random..... =)

Blog Commenting Challenge: Day 2!

Today Jennas Journey's Blog Commenting Challenge is....Tell us about your blog. What do you blog about? Why do you blog? How did you start blogging? What kinds of things do you/are you willing to share with the world? Where do you find your topic inspiration?

I started blogging in April of 2007, right after I found out that we were moving from Kentucky back to our home state of Florida.  We had lived in Kentucky since 2001 and had made a lot of WONDERFUL friends.  Friends that I wanted to stay in contact with.  Several of those friends had also began blogs of their own so I thought then was as good of time as any to begin a blog of my own. Which by the way if you are confused by yesterdays post we then moved back to Kentucky in 2009, this is when I became a blog slacker and was all into Face Book.

The first couple of years I mainly blogged about family, friends and our adventures in life with an occasional recipe thrown in here or there.  Now, I try to add more variety to my blog such as recipes, decorative ideas, the crafts that I am currently making and of course I still have to keep everyone who still reads (if any) updated on the adventures of our life.

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."

Blog Commenting Challenge: Day 1

I am linking up to Jennas Journey today for a Blog Commenting Challenge, in fact it's a week long challenge to get to know fellow bloggers.

If you haven't visited my blog before, then hi! I'm Carla! I am married to a great guy named Phillip and I have been blessed with two wonderful children, Jonah and Courtney. I live in the Bluegrass state, the south central part of Kentucky to be exact. I'm a transplant from Florida. We have two loving dogs. Penelope is our beagle, who we rescued from the pound 7 years ago and then there is Rascal our wanna a be a human, that we paid a $5.00 dollars for. He is an oopsie doggie, part Maltese, Pomeranian and Yorkie.

I was a stay at home mom for several years, homeschool mom for 5 years and now I am a Mortgage Underwriter, working six hours a day getting off in time to see my kids get home from school. So I love what I do even though it is not what I went to school for, which was radiology technology.

My husband and I got married in September of 1993. The same year that I was diagnosed with endometriosis and was told that I would probably never have kids. In 1995 with one year left to go in school, my husband looked at me one afternoon and told me I was pregnant. I sorta laughed at him. Being in the middle of finals I was STRESSED out enough but he insisted that I take a pregnancy test. Now let me just say that just a month early my doctor had went over the whole spill of the chances of me ever getting pregnant where very slim. I gave in to my husband’s request and took a pregnancy test and my husband was RIGHT!!! God had blessed us with a pregnancy, unplanned but it was definitely God’s timing.

26 months after we were blessed with a healthy bouncing baby boy, God blessed us again on his own time, with our precious sweet loving Courtney. I love having them just two years apart. They have always gotten along so well together. It is such a joy to watch them play and interact with one another even in their teen years. God definitely has a blessed me!

Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.

Weed Killer

Let me just tell you this is stuff works!   I've been using this since I first started tackling the weeds in my flower beds at the beginning of the season.  It will kill your weeds within a couple hours.  This morning I sprayed some weeds that had came up in my flower beds and this afternoon the weeds were dead.  I love it because it's inexpensive, you can see the results within hours and no harsh chemicals,  the only downfall is your flower beds will smell like pickles (ha! ha!).

Simply mix:
  • 2 cups vinegar
  • 1 tbs table salt
  • 1 tbs dishwashing liquid
Spray on your weeds and only your weeds because this will kill other things, except for daylillies. Ha! Ha!

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns.
